Residential Addition & Renovation
Our long-term friends needed to expand their small house into a home they could live in for the remainder of their lives. The bungalow required a newly expanded kitchen to reflect contemporary life, space for a dining room, an extra bedroom and a new look. We turned the 723 square foot house into 1,200 square foot home by expanding upwards, through the roof, and outwards, through two exterior walls. The client is a craftsman of fine arts who selected the exterior colours and materials. As a team, we transformed this house into the craftsman style home the clients dreamed of.
Kitchen Renovation
This being my own kitchen, I had a lot of time to think of how to make the best use of my mini kitchen space. Every inch of the 70 square foot space was taken into consideration with this redevelopment. The new kitchen has 30% more storage and more counter space including stainless-steel pull-out counter. The drawers are electrical and the full depth of the counter and well organized to accommodate what is required in a contemporary kitchen. The built-in Miele appliances designed for tight European kitchens allowed for creative space planning. The 18” dishwasher which has almost the same capacity as a standard North American dishwasher allowed for the right amount of storage between the larger sinks and the dishwasher, including a waste and recycling center at the sink. The upper cabinets extend to the ceiling with glass door fronts and glass shelves which allows one to see from below what is on the shelves above. The look of the kitchen is sophisticated and clean with the only pulls being on the appliances. The final result is a kitchen which is great for working in and beautiful to be in. We now truly love the function and beauty of our mini kitchen! This is an example of what can be done in small spaces. The millwork was built by Quality Millwork and the stone and tile were supplied and installed by Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd.
Bathroom Renovation
This main floor bathroom was original to the 1977 bungalow. The clients requested the bathroom reflect their matured taste for rich natural materials. The space was gutted to the studs and replanned taking into consideration all details. We made plan adjustments to provide for a larger shower by changing the entry door from a 24”wide to a 32” wide along with minor walls in the hallway for better storage. The small bathtub was replaced with a larger walk-in tiled shower with a star fired glass panel. The intention was to make the bathroom as accessible as the space would allow. The millwork was designed for better storage through the use of drawers and accessories for jewellery, towels and other items the clients wanted to store. A custom medicine cabinet was designed to be recessed into the wall. Walnut was selected for the millwork with a granite countertop, travertine tile for the floor and shower wall and porcelain for the remaining walls with nickel as the metal finish for the faucets and trim work. The millwork was built by Quality Millwork and the stone and tile were supplied and installed by Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd.
