Bliss Dental's new office comprised of 2,260 square feet for the practice with six operatives. Dr. Kaur and her husband Jas Singh (who is also the business manager) immigrated to Canada from India and have made their home in Winnipeg. Dr. Kaur completed her education in the United States and starting her career at an existing practice before opening her own Winnipeg clinic.
When meeting with the client, we made sure to cover the core values they would like to see in the clinic, along with a detailed list of the functionalities the space also needs to include. Dr. Kaur wanted the space to be soft, comforting and welcoming to her patients. What resulted is a space with soft curved millwork and walls, including a curved pocket door, curved alcove, and curved detailing in the layout of the floors and bulkheads.
Developed through our interactive design process of review and changes, the final redesign added an angle to the curved reception desk to work with a sliding curved pocket door to line up with the existing window mullions. These details helped make the plan interesting, functional for all the operatives, and have the circulation the clients wanted.
The use of materials reflects the functional needs of a dental office, which meant we needed to include rubber flooring to maximize comfort to the medical professionals. We added a solid surface in the operatives and reception desk and acoustical ceiling material for patient comfort. Interior design solutions like these offer a soft, relaxing environment for both staff and patients.
The colours are light shades to help reflect a clean environment with accent colours that are culturally significate to Dr. Kaur. She requested green, yellow and orange be used as the colours of the chairs in the operatives, which we paired together for three groups of two operatives. These colours symbolize health, peace and nature to her and her culture. The use of Sicis Italian glass mosaic tiles for the reception desk front and the alcove and curved wall showcase the rich colours and glistening effect the client desired.
The tight construction schedule of four months for this project allowed the clients to open for business on April 2018.
This project offered us the opportunity to work with clients from another culture, which taught us much about their particular functionality and esthetics in interior design. We were then honoured to be able to combine their cultural aspects into an integrated Canadian design. They are ecstatic with the result!
